The results of the Saarbruecken Cheese Tasting 2003

Meta comments:

(reminder: 5 was best, 1 was worst)

Well-spotted:  Sergey referring to Camembert: "otshen kamamber" (very Camembert) and rating it "5"

New Russians: Pavel, Sergey were the only once to compare cheese (e.g. Chaource) with caviar

strangest comment: Olga referring to Bleu d'Auvergne: "don't like much gorgonzola ..." (and rating it 4)

most balanced person: Holger: 8 out of 15 cheeses rated "3", all cheeses rated between 2-4

Gourmet: Christoph (obviously already a cheese expert) would ONLY taste the Reblochon and rated it "5"

categorical thinker: every cheese tasted by Harris got rated either "2" or "4"

don't give up: Sajjad tried cheeses he didn't like several times. His comments on Pont l'Eveque: No (1st time) ... sorry (2nd time) ... again: no, no (3rd time). Rating: 1

The "Joe Average" award goes to ME: the only cheeses rated "5" by me turned out to be everybody’s favourite

Some numbers:

Cheese lover awards: 1st place: Kanela, tried all cheeses, average rating: 4.67

2nd place: Olga, also tried all cheeses, average rating: 4.53

Worst cheese: Munster, average rating: 2.21

2nd worst: Livarot, average rating: 2.69

Best cheese: REBLOCHON, average rating: 4.21 ... also my personal favourite

2nd best: Morbier, average rating: 4.16 ... also my 2nd favourite ;-)

The standard deviations turned out to be rather boring: Low for "extreme" cheeses (<3 or >4 on average) and high for "average" cheeses.

Thanks a lot for coming. Stay tuned for more events …
