Dear Chocolate-lovers,

I’m sorry for keeping you waiting so long but finally here they are: the results of the chocolate tasting:

General stats:

25 people handed in a score sheet

There were 432 bits of chocolate rated

The overall average rating was 3.4

60 ratings were 4.5 or higher

28 ratings were lower than 1.5.

The average person tried 17 kinds of chocolate

Of the 71 different flavours only 3 nobody tried (Sarotti Halbbitter, Sarotti Trauben Nuss, Lindt 85% Cacao)

Special Awards:

Both the “I love you all” and the “statistician’s horror” award goes to: KANELA, for rating every chocolate tried 5 (… with 3 = average!)

The “statistician’s dream” award goes to: MANDY, for her personal average of 2.96 (and making full use of the scale). Nobody else got closer to a 3.0 average

The “insider knowledge” award goes to: HOLGER, for recommending the winning brand to me (see below)

The “biggest sceptic” award goes to: SETH, for his (low) 2.3 average.

The “size matters” award goes to: NIKOLA, for her wonderful comments on the serving sizes (too large chunks -> gone too quickly)

The “dentist’s dream” award goes to: MARIA, for commenting “too sweet” on half the chocolates

And the very special “7 stomachs” award goes to:  ---- ADRIAN --- for trying 39 (THIRY-NINE!!) different kinds. APPLAUSE !!!  Christian follows with a “mere” 32.

I was hoping to win this award myself but only made it to a lousy 28.

Now for the sweet (and not so sweet) guests:

“I have to try this”: 17 (out of 25) people tried Ritter Sport’s Cocos, average: 2.7 (with every rating from 1-4)   followed by …

“sort of interesting”: 14 people tried Ritter Sports’s Trueffel, average: 2.8 (again with every rating from 1-4)

Winners and losers: A subset of chocolates tried by at least 10 people:

Winners

Choceur – Rahm Mandel, 3.9

K-Classic – Vollmilch Nuss, 3.9

Losers

Rittersport – Alpenmilch, 2.7

Rittersport – Cocos, 2.7

Highest averages:

Milka – Café-Crème, 5.0 (1 rating)

Milka – Joghurts, 5.0 (2 ratings)

low class?: Both of the discount brands Choceur and K-Classic scored above the global 3.4 average (3.6 and 3.7 respectively)

Middle class?: Sarotti: 3.4, Alpia 3.3, Milka: 3.4, Ritter Sport: 3.0

high class?: Feodora: 3.9 (18 ratings), Hachez: 3.4 (26 ratings), Lindt: 3.5 (31 ratings)

So, essentially most brands scored similarly with Ritter Sport pulling down the global average and with Feodora at the top (followed by K-Classic!). Concerning the individual chocolates there is no clear winner as tastes differed quite considerably and some chocolates weren’t tasted often enough to give meaningful results.

Stay tuned for more events …

PS: I admittedly rounded all ratings to the next integer (as this made entering the 432 ratings easier). Recounts will not be allowed.

PPS: Please forward this in case I forgot someone.
